KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Joe Van Belleghem, Partner of Windmill Development Group Ltd. from Victoria, BC, Canada
As a partner of Windmill Developments, Joe Van Belleghem, is responsible for green building development strategies and the BuildGreen Consulting arm. A chartered accountant by training, Joe has over 17 years experience in the property development and financing arena, he serves on the board of directors of the US Green Building Council and is also a founder and director of the Canada Green Building Council...
Joe was the development consultant for the Vancouver Island Technology Park (VITP), a high-tech park in Victoria, British Columbia. It was awarded the gold level certification by the United States Green Building Council under their Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) program, making it the first LEED® certified building in Canada. The project was also awarded the 2002 BOMA BC Earth Award and the UDI Sustainable Development Award.
Joe is a co-developer of Victoria’s Dockside Green project. Co-developed with Vancity Enterprises, Dockside Green will be a socially vibrant, ecologically restorative, economically sound and just community, set on Victoria’s working harbour. It will be a distinct collection of beautifully designed live, work, play and rest spaces designed to enhance the health and well being of both people and ecosystems, both now and in the future
Joe is committed to the ongoing development, education and promotion of environmentally, socially and financially responsible green building developments and will be sharing his experience in green building development from a developer's perspective.

Bill Reed, AIA, LEED, Hon FIGP, principal Integrative Design Collaborative
An internationally recognized proponent and practitioner in sustainability and regeneration Bill is a principal in three firms, the Integrative Design Collaborative, Regenesis, Inc., and Delving Deeper – green building consulting, living system design, and education organizations working to lift building and community planning into full integration and co-evolution with living systems...
His work centers on creating the framework for and managing an integrative, whole-systems design process. The objective: to improve the overall quality of the physical, social and spiritual life of our living places and therefore the planet.

Bill is a planning consultant, design process facilitator, lecturer, and author. He has participated in over 300 presentations and workshops relating to Sustainable, Regenerative and Whole System Design. He has consulted on over two hundred green design commissions and dozens of LEED projects - achieving many certifications – the majority Gold and Platinum. He is a guest lecturer at Universities from Harvard and MIT to the University of British Columbia. His clients range from New York City Department of Design and Construction, U.S. General Services Administration, Loreto Bay, Baja, Mexico, Sidwell Friends School, US Green Building Council, Genzyme Corporation, Teknion, LLC, the Willow School, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, various city planning agencies on the East and West coast, and many private development companies in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Teena G. Shouse, CFM, IFMA Fellow & Senior FM Consultant at FEA Associates, Kansas, US
Teena has 25 years of experience in service related fields, predominately in Facility Management. Her primary expertise includes Project Management, Business Process Improvement, sustainability in FM, staff development, outsourced contract governance, capital planning and budgeting, and Operations & Maintenance...
Before joining FEA, she held the position of VP Strategic Partnerships with ARAMARK overseeing collaborative strategies. Prior to ARAMARK, Teena was the GM of Employee Services at Sprint for 18 years. She was part of the design and construction team which researched, planned and built the 4.2 million sq. ft. campus in Overland Park, Kansas. As GM, she was involved in all aspects of campus operations from day to day operations to sustainability strategies.
Currently, among her projects include consulting on the FM operational plan for the Kaufman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, affecting the operational plan for everything from FM technology to energy management. She creates and teaches Facility Management and Sustainability courses for IFMA and FEA and is a guest speaker at numerous North America and International conferences and universities. From 2005-2007, she served as the Chairman of the IFMA Board of Directors. She was recently appointed to serve as the Deputy Chair of the Global FM Board of Directors, a global federation of FM organizations based in Brussels, Belgium.
Shane Esmore, Director, Principal Sustainability Consultant, Umow Lai Pty Ltd, Melbourne Australia.
Shane is a Director of Umow Lai and Umow Lai's Principal Sustainability Consultant. Umow Lai is a building services and sustainability consultancy and is one of the largest and most active sustainable building consultants in Australia.
Shane has extensive experience in the design of a large number of sustainable buildings across a wide range of project types. Shane's expertise in green building design has been widely recognised for its technical innovation and high performance. Shane has travelled widely, investigating the cutting edge of green building design and technology from around the world.
This experience combined with their ongoing research has enabled Umow Lai to apply innovative sustainable design solutions to numerous leading green building projects in Australia and the Asia Pacific Region, some of which Shane will be sharing with us by way of case studies.
Pooran Desai OBE, co-founder BioRegional Development Group; Technical Director, One Planet Communities.
Pooran studied at Oxford and Cambridge Universities before co-founding BioRegional Development Group with Sue Riddlestone. Initially he worked on sustainable woodland management and charcoal production, working to launch BioRegional Charcoal Company Ltd (BRCC) of which he remains Managing Director. He led on BioRegional's Lavender Project and in 1998, he drew together the partnership to construct BedZED.
During his time at BioRegional, Pooran has been a sustainability consultant to central government, local authorities and developers, in the UK and overseas and lectures widely. For three years he chaired the Homes and Environment group of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Advisory Committee on Consumer Products and the Environment (ACCPE).
In 2005, Pooran helped found property development company BioRegional Quintain Ltd (BQL). He stepped down as co-director of BioRegional Development Group to take up the role of Sustainability Director at BQL. Pooran now divides his time between BQL, working for BioRegional Development Group as a director of the "One Planet Living" initiative, and continuing as MD of BRCC.
In 2004, Pooran was honoured with an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) by the Queen for services to sustainable development.
Professor Mark Swilling, Programme Coordinator: Sustainable Development Planning and Management in the School of Public Management and Planning, University of Stellenbosch and Academic Director of the Sustainability Institute.
Prior to this Professor Swilling was the co-founder and Director of the Graduate School of Public and Development Management at the University of the Witwatersrand, 1995-1998; and co-founder of PLANACT in 1985, an urban development NGO.
Professor Swilling obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Warwick in 1994 and has a BA and a BA (Honours) obtained through the Department of Political Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand where he was also a lecturer from 1982 - 1987.
He has published over 50 academic articles, five books and written extensively for the popular media on a wide range of public policy issues. In 2007 he was invited to be a member of the International Panel on Sustainable Resource Management, established by the United Nations.
Digby Hall - Director, Synergy Green Pty Ltd, Sustainability Consultants, Adelaide Australia.
Synergy Green was established to service the Australian property industry’s growing need for specialist sustainability consultancy services and in particular Green Star expertise. Previously a director of one of Australia’s largest architectural practices, Digby now provides specialist sustainability and Green Star support to all stakeholders in the delivery of green property, ranging from building owners, lawyers and real estate firms to architects, engineers, product manufacturers and builders.
Digby has delivered Green Star training to over 2000 industry professionals in Australia via more than 60 courses on behalf of the GBCA. Digby is also a Certified Assessor for Green Star, having assessed many now-certified Green Star projects for Office, Office Interiors, Education and Multi-Unit Residential. His consultancy is currently facilitating a number of Green Star submissions ranging from Office and Interiors to Education and Healthcare, and is also providing advice to various companies and government departments regarding procurement, product manufacturing and project documentation for Green Star.
Digby is currently working with the GBCA on a range of initiatives, including involvement in the Office Interiors Expert Reference Panel, development of new training courses and input into the Continuing Professional Development program.
Richard Palmer, WSP Group.
After a childhood spent in rivers, riffles and dams; on mountains, mudflats and grasslands, Richard curiously decided to study Mechanical Engineering.
After 4 years at the University of Cape Town, and an interesting period with the South African Breweries Ltd he joined Advanced Environmental in Sydney (now Built Ecology), the specialist sustainable design team of the engineering firm WSP Lincolne Scott. He has worked in Sustainable Consulting/Engineering in the built environment since 2005.
During his time in Australia, Richard was involved with a range of projects including the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Macquarie Bank Building in Sydney, Australian War Memorial and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Pacific Head Quarters in Hawaii. He has subsequently returned to the WSP business in Africa focusing on the development of green engineering within the business and the progress of sustainable urban design and engineering within the South African property industry; sitting on the TWG of the Green Star Retail Tool.
The areas of engineering which are of primary interest to Richard are:
- Engineering systems thinking and integrated design
- The role of engineering and infrastructure in societal upliftment
- Technical delivery of complex systems and achieving complexity in design
- Facilitation of shifting engineering perceptions towards more sustainable solutions
- The potential to model our engineering systems on the most successful systems we have today - complex ecological communities
Jane Henley, Chief Executive Officer , World Green Building Council.
Jane Henley is the Chief Executive Officer of the World Green Building Council (WGBC). Green Building Councils operate in over 70 countries to facilitate the global transformation of the building industry towards sustainability. WorldGBC is a coalition of these country councils, making it the largest international organization influencing the green building marketplace.
Jane was on the founding board then the founding CEO of the New Zealand Green Building Council in 2006. Jane has been a director of the World Green Building Council, since 2007 until becoming the CEO in 2010. Jane is a director of the United Nations Sustainable Building Climate Initiative board, an active speaker and passionate about business leading change.
Jane is committed to driving market transformation that is underpinned by sound economic practices that simultaneously deliver financial, social and environmental benefits.
