Building facades are the “skin” between the building occupant and the external climate, and therefore significantly impact occupant comfort and productivity, and building energy use – also considered in various associated Green Star credits. This seminar will focus specifically on designing facades for optimal daylight availability and thermal comfort.

The aim is to transfer a basic conceptual understanding to seminar attendees on the following subjects:

  • Occupant comfort
  • Defined in terms of thermal comfort, lighting and glare Climate, façade and building energy consumption
  • Introduction to the links between climate, façade and energy consumption from heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting
  • Basic principles of façade design related to daylight availability and solar control
  • Daylight availability: glazing ratio, window transmissivity and header height, shading devices, impact of building depth and avenue width
  • Solar control: solar heat gain, impact of building orientation, insulation, ventilation and shading devices
  • Façade design and Green Star
  • Relates daylight availability and thermal comfort through façade design back to Green Star credits

This is the core course of the GBCSA. The Green Star SA Accredited Professional course provides practitioners with an understanding of the Green Star SA rating system and the ability to apply Green Star SA tools to projects. The course format is that of a fluid interaction between lecture, Q&A, case study examples and in-depth exploration of each category and credit in the Green Star SA system, all in a multidisciplinary group of progressive professionals.

The course emphasizes the necessity of an integrated approach from the consulting team in order to achieve the rating pursued. In order to obtain this professional designation, industry professionals complete the Green Star SA Accredited Professional course and pass an examination, which is run through a third party testing agency.

The Green Star SA Project Certification Workshop is an advanced course suitable for anyone who has either completed the Green Star SA Accredited Professional course (recommended), is familiar with the Green Star SA certification procedure or is actively working on a Green Star SA project. The course is aimed at those who wish to gain greater insight into the certification process and the compilation of high-quality Green Star SA submissions for formal certification.

The course is designed to teach participants about the process of registering a project, collecting and compiling documentation, ensuring appropriate documentation quality, optimising electronic submissions and completing the assessment process. The aim is to ensure that participants learn how to make the certification process as streamlined, cost effective and time effective as possible for their projects and clients.

This half day intensive workshop will be presented by GBCSA staff and an industry expert with submission compilation experience. Participants will also benefit from a small classroom format with group discussions and the combined expertise of a multidisciplinary group. This course is highly recommended for the lead Accredited Professional on a Green Star SA project as well as other members of the project team.

Please Note: This is not an introductory course to Green Star SA for beginners, but for those who are already familiar with the Green Star SA credits and certification process.
